چکیده

Veno-Arterial extracorporeal (VA ECMO) provides temporary mechanical support to the patient with cardiac and/or respiratory failure in cases of cardiogenic shock or heart failure [1-3]. VA ECMO essentially decreases cardiac work and reduces oxygen consumption while providing sufficient organ perfusion. ECMO is a bridge to recovery, left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation or eventual cardiac transplantation. ECMO requires continuous systemic heparin anticoagulation otherwise thrombosis can occur in the oxygenator and circuit leading to devastating complications including embolism and death.

Ecmo in a diabetic patient with cerebellar infarction and ARDS- A case report

Background: Extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been considered as a crucial modality for the management of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Since ECMO is considered to be an invasive modality and may be associated with some complications, there are strict indications for its use. Here we report successful treatment of a case of severe ARDS with Veno-Venous ECMO. Case pre...

Outcome of Veno-Arterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Patients Undergoing Valvular Surgery

BACKGROUND We evaluated retrospectively the early and midterm results of using veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) support in patients undergoing valvular surgery. METHODS A total of 87 patients undergoing valvular surgery received VA-ECMO due to refractory postcardiotomy cardiogenic shock (PCS), who were eligible for inclusion were enrolled in this study. Preoperative...

Successful Left-Heart Decompression during Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation in an Adult Patient by Percutaneous Transaortic Catheter Venting

Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) is widely used in patients with cardiogenic shock. Insufficient decompression of the left ventricle (LV) is considered a major factor preventing adequate LV recovery. A 40-year-old male was diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction, and revascularization was performed using percutaneous stenting. However, cardiogenic shock occurred, an...

A Case of Successful Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support for Cardiac Arrest Associated with Nonocclusive Mesenteric Ischemia

Background: We report a case of successful extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support for cardiac arrest associated with nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI). Case presentation: A 34-year-old previously healthy woman in the sixth week of her second pregnancy was carried to our hospital for abdominal pain and vomiting. She had apparent peritoneal irritation signs with marked hyperglyc...

Factors associated with outcomes of patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support: a 5-year cohort study

INTRODUCTION Mortality of patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) remains high. The objectives of this study were to assess the factors associated with outcome of patients undergoing ECMO in a large ECMO referral centre and to compare veno-arterial ECMO (VA ECMO) with veno-venous ECMO (VV ECMO). METHODS We reviewed a prospectively obtained ECMO database and patients' medical re...
